Police Sports Centre

We consider the grandstand building architecturally interesting and worth preserving, despite its poor technical condition. The distinctive appearance of the grandstand will form a dominant feature of the complex, around which we propose grouping smaller volumes with added functions.

The most significant intervention in the grandstand is its shortening by 2 modules on each side (24 m in total). The reason for this intervention is the excessive capacity of the grandstand and the need to create space for new functions. The space under the grandstand will form the key communication axis of the sports complex.

The main added volumes are distributed symmetrically – a multi-purpose hall on the north side, a mixed-use building with various functions on the south. Smaller volumes in the form of pavilions with various functions are placed on the ground floor in front of the grandstand on the car-park side. The forecourt of the grandstand thus creates a human scale, eliminates the impersonality of the long façade and contributes to the social supervision of the entrance part of the complex.

The concentration of the larger volumes in the front part of the site, together with the terrain conditions, allowed us to treat the rest of the site as a landscape without major building volumes. The shooting range and the athletics tunnel structures are set into the terrain.
